Two children were left in critical condition after they and three other people were struck by a car as they stood on a Las Vegas sidewalk Saturday, police said. Two adults and three children were hit by a car that jumped the curb after colliding with another car in the intersection of Lake Mead and Jones boulevards at around 7 p.m. local time (10 p.m. ET), police said.
The children, age 6 and 9, were in critical but stable condition, police said. An accident between a car going through an intersection and another vehicle making a left hand turn sent one car careening into a group on the sidewalk.
“”It was a very light contact between the two vehicles, but just enough to cause that unstabilizied situation which made that vehicle slide sideways 300 feet down the road and take out some folks that were just standing on the sidewalk minding their own business,” Las Vegas police Sgt. Robert Stauffer told reporters.
“It’s a difficult situation when this happens,” he said.
The driver did not remain on the scene but was taken into police custody, police said. He was only identified as a 50-year-old male.
