Two brothers were shot dead late last night at Chakar village, near Jagraon. They were identified as Heera Singh (40), president of the management committee, Gurdwara Chhevin Patshahi, and Head Constable Balvir Singh (45), both residents of the village. The police said the double murder was linked to a tussle over managing the gurdwara. The committee appointed Heera as its president three months ago. The village youth club, led by Harjit Singh, opposed the decision. Club members alleged that Heera was a Patit Sikh who had got himself baptised only to become the chief. Harjit wanted to head the committee, but he was nominated only as a member.Heera, his family members and other residents were performing ‘sewa’ on the gurdwara premises around 8:30 pm yesterday. Club members arrived and asked Heera to give the audit details of the gurdwara’s income. This led to a heated exchange which turned violent. Club members allegedly fired at their rivals, killing Heera and his brother before fleeing from the spot. The injured were identified as Beer Singh, Balvir’s son Gurvinder Singh, Guramrit Singh, Barjinder Singh and Gurdev Singh.Eleven persons were booked under Section 302 (murder) of the IPC, including Harjit, his brother Charanjit Singh, father Sukhpal Singh and Amandeep Singh.
