Four days after eight-year-old Sanvi Gupta was kidnapped near Anardana Chowk on her way to school, the Patiala police have solved the case with the arrest of an engineering graduate and his jeweller friend.The girl was released by the kidnappers about six hours after the incident on May 4. The investigators zeroed in on the duo after scrutinising the call details of the mobile phone used to make ransom calls. The phone had been snatched from a fruit vendor on April 30.Gursharan Singh Sandhu, DIG, said Deepak Kumar alias Deepa and jeweller Ajay Verma pulled Sanvi into their Verna car at 7.25 am and sped away.He said the duo made at least seven ransom calls to the girl’s father, Amit Gupta, and demanded Rs 2 lakh and 2-kg gold. Sanvi was kept in a godown owned by Deepa at Sullar village. After leaving her there, they took bikes and moved around the city making ransom calls. They also made a few calls to each other.GS Chauhan, SSP, said the kidnappers went back to the godown in a Maruti Zen. However, some passersby spotted them, forcing the duo to leave the girl and escape.He said Sanvi’s parents had been asked to arrange the ransom, but it was never paid. He said the CCTV footage obtained from various places in the city provided vital clues.During the interrogation, it came to light that Deepa, an engineering graduate, owned a sanitary shop at Sullar village. He had been trading with the girl’s father, who owns a business firm, for the past six months. He said the kidnappers were arrested near Lakkar Mandi Chowk. The car and the motorcycles used in the crime, along with an unlicensed revolver, were recovered from their possession, the SSP added.
