Two Akali leaders allegedly assaulted a police team and fired into the air in the hostel of the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) at Manawala late last night.The accused, sarpanch Gurpreet Singh Jolly and Palwinder Singh, were arrested on the basis of a complaint submitted by the institute authorities.The police registered a case under sections 336 (endangering human life), 332 (causing hurt to deter public servant from discharging his duties) and 353 (assault or criminal force to deter a public servant from discharging duties) of the Indian Penal Code and sections 25, 27, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act.The duo is staying in Crescent Parc, the locality where the IIM students’ hostel was shifted two days ago. The police recovered firearms from their houses.Students alleged that the Akali leaders lost their temper without any provocation and scared them away after firing into the air last night.Jolly’s wife Gurleen Kaur said no shots were fired, adding that there was a spat over the objectionable activities of the hostellers.The nodal officer of the IIM-Amritar, Pawan Kumar Singh, showed the police video clips and photographs of SAD leaders opening fire and hurling abuses.
