The bus of a private travel company was on its way from Hyderabad to Kakinada in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh.At least 14 persons are feared dead when a bus belonging to Yatra Genie going from Hyderabad to Kakinada overturned and fell into Nagarjuna Sagar Project canal in Nayakangudem in Khammam in the wee hours today.
Twelve passengers escaped with minor injuries. There were 26 passengers in the bus which started from Miyapur in Hyderabad at 10 pm Sunday.
Fire and Emergency Services officials rescued some passengers who were trapped inside the bus. Officials said that as the water level was just knee deep the 12 passengers could escape.The bus fell 30 feet down into the Left Bank Canal of the NSP. Almost all those who died in the luxury sleeper coach were fast asleep in the upper bunks and as the bus jumped the bridge fence and overturned, the passengers sleeping in the upper bunks not only took the full impact of the fall but also drowned.
The survivors told the police that the negligence by the driver led to the accident.
According to them, the driver was running the vehicle at a high speed and applied sudden brake on reaching the bridge. The bus overturned and fell into the canal.
Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao and his Andhra Pradesh counterpart N. Chandrababu Naidu expressed shock over the accident. Rao directed officials to ensure best possible treatment to the injured.
