A MAN is being treated in hospital after a suspected axe attack `during an overnight mugging in Perth’s northern suburbs. Police were called to a park in Balga around 2am on Friday following reports that a man had been injured by a machete.

A WA Police spokesman said medical teams later clarified the man, 28, was attacked by a blunt object, however police are still trying to confirm the weapon.

It’s been reported the man was struck a number of times with the blunt side of an axe before his backpack and phone were stolen.

He is currently in a stable condition in Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital.
