A number of people had been in the unit but all were outside when Saanich firefighters arrived, with one occupant trying to put the fire out with a garden hose.
Saanich firefighters were called about 4:30 p.m. and found heavy smoke coming from a centre unit of the complex. The fire was under control by about 5 p.m., said Acting Battalion Chief Darwin Schellenberg.
He said the fire was confined to one unit and started in the unit’s basement area. The cause remains under investigation, with damage estimated at $300,000.
“It was a significant fire,” Schellenberg said. “There was an aggressive interior attack that was the method of bringing the fire down.
“It wasn’t an exterior attack, the crews made entry to the basement to attack the fire.”
Saanich police provided traffic control during the incident.
