One person was killed and eight others were injured Wednesday night after a car crashed into a home during a prayer group meeting in the Harbor Gateway area, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.
Officials said the driver then ran away from the scene and the crash is being investigated as a hit and run.
The crash was reported about 8 p.m. in the 14800 block of South Orchard Avenue. The fire department reported that nine people were taken to hospitals, five with serious injuries. One of the victims eventually died, LAPD Capt. Leland Sands said.
The victims were between 40 and 80 years old, the fire department said, and witnesses told KTLA they were at the home for a regular prayer group meeting.
One of the witnesses said he heard a loud boom and then saw two of his friends pinned under the car.
The fire department initially reported that people remained trapped when firefighters arrived at the scene, but by 8:30 p.m. everyone was out of the house.
Aerial video from Sky5 showed fire trucks and ambulances surrounding the home as urban search and rescue crews worked to get the car out of the building.
Dozens of neighbors and spectators gathered near the scene after the crash, aerial video showed.
The crash is under investigation.
